In a new home, designer Lisa Krul DeFrances created a sophisticated living room that brings drama to neutrals and a clean,
contemporary sensibility to classic furnishings. Rich taupe grass cloth of the walls punches up the contrast with the white
trim, mantel, and upholstery, as do darker accents such as the bobbin-turned chair frames and the iron chandelier and table
base. Chunky three-inch-thick oak shelves filled with shapely ceramics draw the eye toward the fireplace wall. DeFrances mixed
neutral patterns and textures with ease, juxtaposing stripes, an overscaled herringbone pattern, and polka-dots without making
the room feel busy. Textural interest comes from the fireplace surround of tumbled-stone mosaic tile and the flat-woven wool
rug. “This room has an excellent layered look,” says judge Amanda Smith. “There’s a great balance of texture.”
