Editor's Note: We were saddened to learn of Joye Hirsch's recent death from ovarian cancer. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with her and extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family and loved ones.
Even as a young girl growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Lila Hertz knew she wanted to continue her mother’s tradition of hosting festive holiday dinners for her family. For more than 30 years, she and her husband, Doug, have welcomed extended family and friends into their Atlanta home to celebrate Hanukkah. She takes pride in planning a traditional menu, including beef brisket, made-from-scratch potato latkes, and even homemade applesauce.
“I don’t entertain very often, but when I do, I like it to be pretty,” says Hertz. “I love for things to be appealing, from the way the table looks to the flowers to the way the food is presented on the plate.”
For this particular gathering, one of Hertz’s friends, designer Joye Hirsch, helped her make the most of the accessories she had in her personal collection and introduced gold chargers to complement the foil-wrapped chocolate coins that are a tradition of the season. “I’d worked with Lila on her home but had never helped her set a table before,” says Hirsch. “She really wanted to use her own things and her husband’s grandmother’s crystal. The gold accents make it come to life.”
