What if my last name is hyphenated?
When using initials, all four letters appear the same size and in order. If you want your maiden and married initials to be larger and in the center, they should be hyphenated. Your first initial should be to the left and your middle initial to the right. Since most monogram styles are designed for three initials, ask to see a proof before making a decision.

Is it appropriate to drop my maiden name instead of my middle name?
“Traditionally, a woman would use her first, maiden, and married names,” says Jane Scott Hodges of Leontine Linens. “But I encourage clients to use whatever makes them happy.”

When is it suitable to use my husband’s initials?
Most men put their initials inside their tuxedo coat or on their walking cane―anything masculine that is for personal use. Traditionally a man’s initials might also appear on barware. However, Hodges poses the question: “Does your husband notice what’s on the bed? If he does and it would mean something to him to have his initials on a pillow, then by all means, include him.”
