Nightstand Essentials

  • A great book or magazine on the nightstand is a must. "I find that, as a parent, my bedroom is a refuge and I cherish the time I spend reading and relaxing before I go to sleep," says Chicago designer Alessandra Branca. Reading is a perfect way to unwind at the end of the day, so books or other reading material are a necessary addition to the bedroom. Keep your favorite bedtime reads on the nightstand, within easy reach, or have a small bookcase next to your bed. A small, adjustable reading lamp is also essential.
  • Keep a water carafe and glass nearby. Nothing ruins a good night's sleep like waking up thirsty at 3 a.m. and then stumbling into the kitchen for a drink of water. Flowers can also refresh the senses and provide a bright splash of color. Faintly scented candles are another option for adding fragrance to the bedroom.
