Stacey Cunningham, a newly single mother, moved into this town house, built about 25 years ago in Buckhead, to be closer to her parents. The house is fairly traditional in style, but as an accomplished cook, Cunningham wanted a kitchen that was more efficient and modern. For inspiration, she consulted the Italian cabinetry company Poliform/Varenna. Roy Otwell, co-owner of Poliform Atlanta, worked with her to create the meticulously crafted European kitchen by mixing luxurious materials with slightly more affordable ones and equipping her with "just enough" kitchen. A wall of white subway tile, marble countertops, and dark wood floors are all a nod to the more traditional architecture -- important because the space is visible from the dining room, living room, and foyer.
The Transformation
Before, the kitchen was in the same space, but arranged differently, with painted wood cabinets and dated appliances. Now, a 12-foot run of cabinets in African wenge wood and dark brown lacquer forms a pared-down galley kitchen with modern elegance. Limited upper cabinets keep the feeling light and open. A generous island provides more workspace, as well as a place for dining and casual gatherings.
