Showers swathed the walls in a biscuit-toned Venetian
plaster that captures the play of light throughout the first floor.
Epitomizing her ability to mix periods and countries of origin, Showers
hung a painting by German-born Hans Hofmann over the 17th-century Italian
mantelpiece. She found the Russian Empire -- style chandelier in France. A
pair of custom-made Napoléon III -- style banquettes flank the
fireplace.
