Serenity is the key word designer Jeannie Krumdieck uses to describe this spacious bath, part of a new home in Birmingham that she created with her husband, architect Alex Krumdieck, his associate Paul Callan, and project designer Ami French. “The space is very contemporary yet carefully detailed, not minimal and void,” says Krumdieck.

The light-colored shell created by the limestone floors and lacquered vanities gains warmth from wood accents—fir-framed windows, a teak floor and ceiling in the bath/shower area, and floor-to-ceiling teak cabinets lining one wall. Windows surround the tub with a view of leafy green foliage for the effect of bathing in a luxurious tree house.

Krumdieck lined the large walk-in shower in slightly iridescent glass mosaic tiles in sand and bottle-green colors that pick up the palette outside the windows. In the center of the 25-by-24-foot room, back-to-back vanities seem to float, with full-length mirrors hiding additional mirrors that pull out from the side and swivel.

“This bath is a great example of warm modernism,” says Senior Editor Clinton Smith. “The mix of materials keeps it from feeling cold.” Adds judge Deborah Griffin, “It’s a wonderful intermingling of indoors and out.”
