Summer Color
Whether pale and cool or bold and vibrant, color adds a fresh perspective to summer rooms -- try our favorite tips for using the season's hues

Add a shot of bright color to a room and you instantly update it. In summer, the bolder the color, the better, but pale shades can also make a room seem a bit cooler, which is always welcome in the humid South.

Here are our tips for using summer's colors in simple and interesting ways:

1. Trade your white slipcover for one in bright red.

2. Use tropical print-covered cushions on your wicker or rattan furniture.

3. Place one bright bloom, such as an orange Gerbera daisy, in each of several small vases and group together or scatter around a room.

4. Frame modern artwork with primary-colored mats rather than the typical neutrals.

5. Invest in china in the season's hottest color, coral.

6. Bowls of lemons or limes make simple and eye-popping centerpieces. For added contrast, place them in cobalt blue bowls.

7. Fill a shelf with a collection of seaglass or vivid glass vases.

8. Dress the bed in pink or lavender linens instead of white.

9. Toss pillows in retro prints on the sofa.

10. If you're really feeling daring, finally repaint the kitchen that vibrant red you've always wanted.
