THE CHANGELING ROSE
Antique roses are experiencing a revival, with specialized boutique vendors and "rose rustlers" catering to enthusiasts across the nation. And one old specimen in particular, Rosa chinensis mutabilis, also known as Mutabilis or "The Butterfly Rose," deserves the modern gardener's attention. This rose's flowers change colors as they mature, with single petals opening yellow and then morphing through shades of tawny orange, pink, and crimson. Mary Palmer Dargan, of Dargan Landscape Architects in Atlanta, is a big Mutabilis fan. "They're nearly thornless and resistant to diseases," she says. "And they bloom almost year-round, up to 11 months here in Georgia."
