Cottage garden guru Ryan Gainey appreciates time-honored selections but eschews
the "old-fashioned" label. "Let's call them nostalgic plants
that have fallen out of fashion," he says. For proven blooms, Gainey suggests
petunias, salvia, asters, chrysanthemums, marigolds, cosmos, larkspur, phlox,
plume poppies, alstromeria, and forget-me-nots. Able to endure "sheer and
total neglect," these plants make beautiful -- and aggressive -- additions to the garden. "They're delightfully invasive, spreading
themselves around, often into some rather nice places," Gainey says. "You'll
get the best result by combining them with woody shrubs, hydrangeas, or antique
roses."
