Magazines are notoriously guilty of showcasing
massive round centerpieces on the dining room table (we call them "hairnet arrangements"). The fact is, we exaggerate the scale
in hopes of making a beautiful picture. We certainly don't recommend
replicating the look in practice, at least not if you want to actually see
that George Clooney look-alike who may, with luck, end up sitting opposite
you. That's why we love low arrangements -- if they break out beyond the
center of the table, even better. Think small, clear vases at each place
setting, or arrangements of greenery down the length of the table. Have a
seat at the table before guests arrive and make sure everyone will have a
clear view.
