4. Know when (not) to fold them.  
Tricked-up napkin folds are for restaurants -- usually the ones that are trying way too hard to make up for really bad food. Forget the origami swans and stick with a simple, classic fold. (And while we're on the subject of pet peeves and animal life better left in ponds, can we also dispense with the idea of goldfish swimming around in flower vases? It's not that charming -- or original).
