Works on Paper
You might find: hand-coloring that is very old but not original. Ferrari's botanical prints, circa 1646, often have hand-coloring that was done in the 18th century. The paint was based on vegetable dyes, which are muted and translucent, allowing the engraved lines to show through. The color is now considered a part of the prints' appeal.

Steer clear of: damage to the paper itself. Works on paper are vulnerable to light, moisture, and rough treatment. Glue marks, cuts, and tears, as well as acid burns from previous mats, can be a problem.
