| Making Sense of the Market |

The antiques field can overwhelm the amateur: Is that eye-catching piece an investment, a steal, or an out-and-out fake? Sometimes even the experts are surprised. But some elemental advice can help guide you: Do your research, train your eye, and always, always work with a reputable dealer, one who stands behind his or her pieces with a written description to back up the sale. A good dealer can help illuminate the period and setting from which the pieces emerged.
And remember, perfection is hardly an asset in this sentimental, reverent world. The wrinkles, chips, and wear of centuries are part of the appeal. Wonderful but worn pieces can be much more valuable than mediocre perfection. And not only that, but perfect polish and bright, slick surfaces could be cause for suspicion.
